Bastard out of Carolina is one of those films that you’ll likely only see on the Lifetime Movie Network. Winner of the Primetime Emmy award, the movie is based off the book by Dorothy Allison and was released in 1996. Anney Boatwright and her daughter Ruth Anne, also known as Bone, are struggling to make ends’ meat in their little home town in South Carolina. Anney has what some people might call a ‘dependent’ personality. She stays with her abusive boyfriend because he manages to put food on the table and a roof over their heads. Glenn likes the power he holds over Anney and her kids and it isn’t long before he’s beating on not just her but her kids as well. When Anney’s family finds out what Glenn has been doing to Bone they retaliate. Angry, and hoping to get a bit of revenge for all he’s been through, Glenn comes back into Bone’s life just when she believes she’s gotten rid of him for good. Only this time, when he see her, he goes much further than simply beating her. But has he finally gone too far for Anney to forgive him, or will she convince herself that he’s still a good man at heart and go back to him?
