Despicable Me (2010)
Director: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud, Sergio Pablos
Cast: Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, Elsie Fisher
Despicable Me does for villains what The Incredibles did for super heroes. In comic books everyone likes to hear the villains side of the story, if only to understand what their motivation is. In this film’s case, the villain isn’t poked and prodded so that the audience can understand WHY he’s a villain. Instead, we delve right in the middle of a plot gone horribly wrong. Gru is a criminal mastermind living in suburban America (because really, where else would he be?). Like any villain, Gru has big plans and his current project involves stealing the moon. What he could realistically do with it is left up for debate, but the point is that he wants it. He would be able to get it to, if only the three orphans Margo, Edith, and Agnes would start acting like proper pawns and stop bringing out those despicable fatherly instincts in him. Starring Steve Carell as Gru and Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Elsie Fisher as Margo, Edith, and Agnes, Despicable Me was directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud.
