Gone with the Wind (1939)
Director: Victor Fleming
Cast: Thomas Mitchell, Olivia de Havilland, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Clark Gable
This story follows a young woman through her life before, during, and after the American Civil War. We witness everything she lives through, from absolute wealth on her father’s plantation, to life during the Civil War, and beyond. We are there when she begs the man she loves to love her in return, or at least to marry her instead of his cousin. We are there when she must protect her home and family heirlooms from desperate scavengers. We follow her through her loves and losses. Scarlett O’Hara is a tough, persistent, resilient, and extremely beautiful woman who reminds us that a woman’s strength is not just one of the fads of the new millennium. Rhett Butler is the man who woos her, and finally wins her, but is not the man she truly loves. This is a classic film-the story is wonderful, and as a period piece it is fabulous.![]()
