MacGruber (2010)
Director: Jorma Taccone
Cast: Ryan Phillippe, Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer, Will Forte, Maya Rudolph
Written by Will Forte and John Solomon and directed by Jorma Taccone, MacGruber was released in May of 2010. Starring Ryan Phillippe, Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer, and Will Forte as MacGruber, this movie appeals to me for one very simple reason. The guy who’s supposed to save the world? Yeah, he’s rocking a mullet. Something that would have worried me severely in real life, now tickles my funny bone since I’m not one of the poor saps who has to be saved by him. MacGruber, despite his hair, is a hero. With over 16 purple hearts to add to his boatload of other awards and medals, he’s a real man’s man, and therefore the perfect candidate to defeat Dieter Von Cunth when the guy goes and steals a nuclear warhead. In my mind, any criminal who would steal a warhead is automatically moved to the bottom of my shit list, since the very fact that they’re willing to go that far most likely means that they’re badass enough to take me down. It would be like me challenging a Charlie’s Angel when Little Debbie was still my one and only friend. Not smart. But whatever, this is television so obviously Macgruber is going to win anyway. And that’s not a spoiler, so much as my own innate sense of cynicism.
