The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
Director: Gabriele Muccino
Cast: Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Thandie Newton, Brian Howe
Wow. And then some. Not only is this film inspired by a true story, not only was it written beautifully, not only was it directed flawlessly and acted powerfully, it stars Will Smith. Let me take this moment to applaud Will Smith. This is the story of Chris Gardner, whose work as an outside salesman is not very rewarding. Nobody seems to want or need the bone density scanners he sank all of his money into. Taxes are late, rent is two and a half months overdue, and his wife thinks he has his head in the clouds. Then she leaves him. As he decides to pursue a career as a stockbroker, he learns he must first complete a six-month internship with, obviously, no pay. Now he must work even harder than before, under more stressful circumstances and in deplorable conditions. With his son in tow he sets off in the pursuit of a better life. And happiness.
