The Rum Diary (2011)
Synopsis: Grounded on the first novel of Hunter S. Thompson. Exhausted of the dissonance and rage of New York City and the devastating rules of then Eisenhower-era America, writer Paul Kemp goes to Puerto Rico to publish for a local periodical, run by lowly editor Lotterman. Getting along with the life of the Puerto Rico island, Paul eventually becomes hooked with Chenault, the wildly beautiful Connecticut-born wife-to-be of Sanderson, an American entrepreneur devoted to change Puerto Rico into a capitalist environment that serves the rich. When Kemp is asked to write in favor of the shrewd businessmen, he is now faced with a choice: either to do what he is asked to, or to do what he thinks is right.

Seriously, what’s with Johnny Depp, the Caribbean, and rum? Perhaps we will never know, but his latest movie The Rum Diary has proven that the three of them mix together in a good way. The Rum Diary of course stars Johnny Depp as Paul Kemp, a freelance reporter who decides to leave his fast-paced lifestyle to sail the seas and settle on an island in Puerto Rico.
He chances upon a very crucial point in his life when he got a gig on writing for a nearly forgotten newspaper in the charming Caribbean. Paul is now forced to do good on a lot of different levels because he has to have a more secure post as his current status leans more likely to not having a job at all.
The production of this movie was originally set to start way back in 2004 but apparently it was not revealed why the release of the movie and the making of this film were moved years after. Like most films these days, The Rum Diary is also based on a famous novel. Another good thing about this movie is that it does not only cast Johnny Depp and expect him to single-handedly pull off the show (even if he can) but they also got Aaron Eckhart, who is a good supporting actor.
With Johnny Depp leading the way, there is no doubt that this movie will be seen by people everywhere. Sometimes people don’t even have to find out what the storyline is, as long as they see Johnny Depp’s name on the poster.
