Valkyrie (2008)
Director: Bryan Singer
Cast:Tom Cruise, Bill Nighy and Carice van Houten
Fears of Scientology
Valkyrie is a historical World War II drama set in the Germany of 1944. It was a failed plot to kill Adolf Hitler. The name was very apt for the plot because in Norse legend Valkyrie is one of the female figures who decides who will die in battle. The movie with Tom Cruise playing Colonel Von Stauffenberg was released on December 25, 2008. The film with a budget of $75 million made a gross profit of more than $200 million. The shooting planned in Germany was stalled for some time because some German politicians and members of the Stauffenberg family were suspicious of Cruise’s adherence to Scientology.
Failed assassination attempt
The movie is an enthralling depiction of the plot to kill Hitler on the 20th of July 1944. The plotters indeed thought for some time that they had succeeded but Hitler survived the assassination attempt. Von Stauffenberg was shot by firing squad but defiantly shouted, ‘Long live sacred Germany’ before he died.
His eye patch movie
The star cast of the movie included Terence Stamp and Kenneth Branagh. Tom Cruise had himself compared to Goebbels because of his belief in Scientology. He had to wear an eye patch in the movie. Surprisingly the movie did reasonably well in Germany. The movie was directed by Bryan Singer and the music director was John Ottman.
