Youth in Revolt (2009)
Director: Miguel Arteta
Cast: Michael Cera, Portia Doubleday, Jean Smart, Zach Galifianakis, Erik Knudsen
Michael Cera never ceases to impress. This film, rounded out with a very impressive and funny cast including Fred Willard, Steve Buschemi, Ray Liotta, and Zach Galifianakis, whom I would never have given the time of day to had it not been for The Hangover, is a winner.
Michael Cera plays Nick Twisp, an extremely intelligent nerd. When he grows up he wants to be a novelist. Right now he wants to lose his virginity. Being raised by parents who don’t seem to have a clue about their son’s needs much less care about them, Nick must figure it all out for himself. Especially when he meets Sheeni.
She is beautiful, intelligent, and knowledgeable about the same things as Nick. She is seductive, and she is mysterious. If his life was difficult and confusing before, it gets much worse at this point. Oh-and Jean Smart is incredible-long gone are her days as Charlene Frazier on Designing Women-this woman is a fantastic actress, and it is so great to watch her in the intriguing and eclectic roles she plays. Good for her.
